Mission Statement
"To provide holistic
healing to First Nations and Inuit youth, families, and communities
in a safe and secure environment."
We are located:
21 Kilometers north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Our location is on
the Deep Creek Reserve, part of X'atsull First Nation (Secwepemc).
This is often commented on as a peaceful location as we are surrounded
by fir, alder and pine trees with the buildings themselves nestled
near the base of an old ski hill. A gentle creek runs near the sweat
lodge and wildlife such as deer, bear and moose are often observed
close by.
Today Nenqayni Wellness Centre operates 2 programs:
Family Alcohol & Drug Program (6 week
program)
Youth & Family Inhalant Program (6 month program)
General History:
Nenqayni Wellness Centre Society is governed by the 15 bands. The chiefs
of the 15 bands are the members of the society and elect a Board of
Directors which consists of 9 directors, with 3 from each of the 3
Nations Secwepemc (Shuswap), Tsilhqot'in (Chilcotin), and Dakelh (Carrier).
See "Governance Board" page.
Nenqayni Wellness Centre was registered as a non-profit society in 1983.
The Centre began serving individual adult clients. The location was in
the former St. Joseph's Mission Residential School at Sugar Cane, Williams
Lake.
In July 1996, a Youth & Family Inhalant Program
was added. This was the first centre in Canada to admit clients to
the new Youth Solvent Abuse Centres program.
There have been 3 moves and lots of changes to the Centre since it first
opened.
In 2001, Nenqayni Wellness Centre was accredited by the Canadian Council
for Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA). The new Youth Inhalant Centre
was completed with clients moving in, in July 2002. |
